Public education is the great equalizer in the United States. It is the primary way we keep our democracy and society strong. There is no greater responsibility of state government than to facilitate quality public education for all students. As such, strengthening public education was my primary reason for seeking elected office and remains my top priority. My parents are retired public school educators and I am currently pursing my Master’s Degree in Education from Wayne State University.
It is clear the way we fund education in Michigan is broken. It is not fair that school districts must deal with uncertainties about funding levels each year. A member of the House Education Committee, I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the “K-16 proposal” in the Michigan House of Representatives. I also introduced legislation to hold charter schools more accountable.
Outside of parental involvement, the most important element needed for quality education is a dedicated and resourceful teacher. Teachers deserve to be treated with respect and to receive compensation that reflects the importance of their job. This includes the unrestricted ability to bargain for whatever health benefit package they prefer.
