Will Michigan keep its promise to college students?

A few dozen college students rallied at the state Capitol today, urging lawmakers not to cut the Michigan Promise Scholarship during the budget process.

"We can't afford to cut the Promise scholarship," said Mitchell Rivard, president of the Michigan State University College Democrats, the group that organized the rally. Several lawmakers attended the event on the Capitol steps.

Sen. Michael Prusi, D-Ishpeming, told the crowd that cutting the scholarship will hurt students as well as the colleges they attend.

"It was a promise made to nearly 100,000 students," Prusi said.
