Middle Class - Union Made

This week’s events in Wayne-Westland have stirred lots of passion among MEA members. For many, it has rekindled a real fire for unionism – especially in showing how the power of collective action can be the impetus for positive change.

It’s important to keep that union spark ablaze as we approach the challenges ahead. Unions have a critical role in today’s America – particularly in protecting our middle class and growing an economy that ensures a strong future for our children.

In his book, “Middle Class - Union Made”, Dr. Richard Levins talks about today’s “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer” mindset that’s apparent at the gas pump, at the grocery store, and in the housing market. Decisions that line the pockets of corporations and special interests leave middle class families behind and threaten our economic stability.

As school employees, we know how critical education is to the economy, especially in the development of a well-trained, well-qualified workforce. But even in our schools we feel the impact of the attacks on the middle class, in the form of dwindling resources, rising class sizes and outsourcing of jobs to companies interested more in profit than in student success.

Public education has always been the gateway to the middle class dream. To protect that dream for future generations, we must ensure students have access to world class public schools that prepare them for 21st century jobs – jobs that will provide them and their families with a strong livelihood, the opportunity of home ownership, and a secure place in a thriving American economy.

This year’s election is a crucial step in that work. As a union, MEA takes pride in supporting friends of public education who understand the connection between education and the economy. We need to elect candidates who will put public education first – for the benefit of our students’ future and our economic future.

Find out who some of those candidates are by visiting our recommended candidates section.
